A woman who was loitering west of town Wednesday was arrested on drug-related charges after she showed a sheriff’s deputy that she had a substance resembling methamphetamine.
Pontotoc County resident Sherry Adams, 42, was booked into the Pontotoc County Justice Center on suspicion of possessing methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting arrest. The case will be sent to the Pontotoc County District Attorney’s Office, which will decide what charges to file.
The events that led to Adams’ arrest began at about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, when Deputy Travis Wilson investigated a report of a suspicious vehicle at Golden’s West Side Mini Storage, located on the corner of State Highway 3W and County Road 3510. The person reporting the vehicle told a dispatcher that the car had been at Golden’s for about two hours.
When Wilson arrived at the scene, he saw a red Volkswagen Beetle sitting in front of the storage building and a woman standing beside the car, according to a copy of Wilson’s report. The woman identified herself as Adams, but she wasn’t able to stand still and was having difficulty focusing on Wilson’s questions.
Adams told Wilson that she had a storage unit on the property, but the owners had locked her out of the unit because she hadn’t paid what she owed. Adams also said that a friend drove her to the storage units, then left her there and began walking north on CR 3510.
Adams told Wilson she did not have any weapons, and Wilson asked her to turn out her pockets to prove she wasn’t carrying a weapon, according to the report. Adams reached into her right front pocket and pulled out two insulin syringes, then told Wilson that the syringes were used and dirty.
“I asked Sherry if she had any dope on her person, where she advised, ‘You know I have dope,’” Wilson wrote in his report. “Sherry then reached into her right front pocket again and retrieved a small clear baggie containing a crystal-like substance commonly associated with methamphetamine.”
Wilson said he started handcuffing Adams, but she pulled away from him, fell into the front seat of her car and did not obey his commands. Wilson and another deputy got Adams out of the car and put her on the ground, where Wilson finished handcuffing her.
After driving Adams to the jail, Wilson took the baggie containing the crystal-like substance to the sheriff’s office for testing, according to his report. The substance tested positive for meth, and the baggie and the substance were sent to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation for a lab analysis.
