Ada church helps residents fight addictions

Tishomingo — Nearly three years ago, officials at the Ada First Assembly of God Church decided the church should offer an alternative to secular recovery programs.

The church latched onto the Celebrate Recovery program, a national program based on eight principles from the Beatitudes. Instead of targeting a specific addiction, Celebrate Recovery is open to people struggling with problems including sexual abuse, drug abuse, eating disorders and anxiety.

The program incorporates some elements of support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous, including the 12 steps, said the Rev. Jimmy Keith. But he said the program emphasizes Christian principles of recovery instead of a secular approach.
