The U.S. Senate has confirmed a member of the Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma who is currently the dean of the University of New Mexico Law School to oversee the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
The Senate approved President Barack Obama’s nomination of Kevin Washburn as Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs by unanimous consent late Friday.
The confirmation was praised by Chickasaw Nation Gov. Bill Anoatubby and applauded by U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar.
“(I’m) pleased the Senate acted so quickly to confirm the nomination of Kevin Washburn,” said Anoatubby.
