It’s almost time to kick off one of the most important annual functions held in Ada, and it will happen Tuesday, officials said.
The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Pontotoc County is planning a kickoff rally Tuesday at noon in the Chickasaw Nation Community Center, located on Mississippi just north of the railroad tracks.
While the actual relay won’t be held until May 31, the kick off celebration will help planners sign up teams and better prepare for the number of participants.
Pontotoc County residents are invited to attend the event, and organizer Greg McCortney explained its importance.
“This community celebration is open to anyone who wishes to learn more about Relay for Life and how to get involved. Relay for Life is a community event that honors cancer survivors, current cancer patients and caregivers. Relay also pays tribute to those who have lost their battle with cancer,” McCortney said.
Each year, the Relay for Life is held at East Central University’s Norris Field, which is near downtown.
The event is considered a community celebration where individuals and teams camp out, barbecue and take turns walking around a track relay-style to raise funds to fight cancer. When night falls, participants light hundreds of luminaria around the track in a moving ceremony to honor cancer survivors as well as friends and family member who have been lost to the disease, McCortney explained.
