Cause of deadly crash probed

Ada —

An Ada High School senior football player was killed in a motorcycle wreck Wednesday night.

Cody N. Johnson was eastbound on state Highway 3W, one mile north of Ada, when his 2006 Yamaha motorcycle struck an unknown object, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. He was wearing a helmet at the time.

Johnson, 18, was pronounced dead at the scene by Valley View Regional Hospital EMS personnel and taken to Criswell Funeral Home.

The Highway Patrol was still gathering information about the wreck as of Thursday afternoon, said Trooper Brian Bagwell.

Johnson’s jersey number was 56 and a new team slogan has sprung up to inspire the Cougars to fight for a state championship.

Ada Public Schools Superintendent Pat Harrison confirmed Johnson was a student and football player at Ada High. He added the students, faculty and staff were mourning Johnson’s death.

“Ada is a close-knit community and we have school staff, counselors, church representatives and many others familiar with our students at Ada High School offering their support,” Harrison said in an email to The Ada News. “Students and staff will have the opportunity to meet with counselors as much and as often as needed. Our focus right now is on our students and staff, but we also must remember Cody’s family during this incredibly difficult time.”

Johnson was a defensive end for the Cougar football team and the remainder of the playoff games have been dedicated to him by his teammates. Their slogan is “20For56.” If the Cougars continue with the march toward a state championship this year, it would mark the 20th state championship earned by the team.
