Local teams prepare for playoffs

Ada —

Most area basketball teams are facing grueling travel schedules this postseason, but five local schools will be hosting district tournaments this week as the playoffs begin for Classes A and B.

In Class A, Allen, Stonewall and Roff will all be district sites, and five of the six teams from those three schools are guaranteed to play in their district title games. The exception is the Roff boys squad, which will face Bowlegs in an elimination game at 8 p.m. Friday for the right to meet Strother in Saturday’s 8 p.m. championship game.

Roff’s girls, meanwhile, will meet the winner of a (6:30 p.m.) Friday contest between Bowlegs and Strother in Saturday’s girls district title game, also at 6:30.

Stonewall’s girls (ranked No. 16 in Class A) and boys squads will also take Friday off and will await the winners of elimination games between Indianola and Wetumka.

At Allen, the 12th-ranked Lady Mustangs and 14th-ranked Mustangs are part of a two-school district tournament with Achille, and their championship games will be played at 6:30 and 8 p.m. Saturday. Both teams from each Saturday game will advance to the regional tournament.

In Class B, Tupelo and Asher will both host district tournaments, although they will compete in different areas of the state.

Tupelo’s boys will get a first-round bye and will face the survivor of an 8 p.m. game Friday between area rivals Sasakwa and Calvin, but the Tupelo girls will have to beat Calvin in a 6:30 p.m. contest Friday to earn the right to face top seed Sasakwa in Saturday’s championship game.

Both Asher squads are guaranteed to advance, though. The Lady Indians and Indians will meet the survivors of Friday elimination contests between Wanette and Gracemont (at 6:30 and 8 p.m.) Saturday night for the district championship.

In addition to the busy small-school playoff schedule, area teams in Classes 2A through 4A will finish up the final full week of their regular season with games Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Thursday’s only area contest has Latta hosting Linday, and on Friday Ada will visit Tecumseh, Konawa is at Byng, Coalgate entertains Antlers, Sulphur hosts Dickson and Vanoss travels to Dibble.

On Saturday, Coalgate is at Atoka for a rivalry doubleheader, and Latta will visit Sulphur; Monday’s schedule has Holdenville at Konawa and Lindsay at Vanoss; and the area regular season will wrap up Tuesday with McAlester at Ada, Byng hosting Atoka, Coalgate visting Savanna, Latta at Washington and Sulphur traveling to Madill.
