Byng —
The Byng softball team entered Tuesday night’s contest against Roff riding the momentum of a 3-1 win over friendly rival and highly-ranked foe Konawa just 24 hours earlier.
As good as that victory was, Taylor Canida and the rest of the Lady Tigers didn’t seem too impressed.
Canida held the Byng offense in check the entire night, scattering five hits and allowing just one unlucky run in the bottom of the seventh in Roff’s 5-1 victory at the Bobby Johns Softball Complex.
The win improved Roff to 9-1 on the year while Byng slipped to 6-10.
“It was good for us being off a week,” said Roff head coach Kathy Gregson. “Hopefully we shook off some rust heading into the Moss tournament.”
The Lady Tigers head to Moss Thursday for a first-round matchup with New Lima at 3 p.m. Local squads Stonewall and Tupelo are also in that 11-team field. The Lady Longhorns face Earlsboro at 2 p.m. and Tupelo meets the Varnum-Weleetka winner at 1 p.m.
Byng is also back in action Thursday, traveling to the Coalgate Festival where they’ll face the host Lady Wildcats and Vanoss.
While Canida was working out of her only real trouble of the game in the first two innings, Roff scored single runs in the first and second to give the talented sophomore all the run support she would need.
J.J. Stewart led off the game wit a base hit up the middle before Byng ace Tiffany Owens got two quick outs. But Canida kept the inning alive with a base hit to right field and Casey Kelley followed with an RBI single to put Roff ahead 1-0.
In the top of the second, Magan Kile led off with a hit and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Taylor McCoy. Kile went to third on a wild pitch and RHS nine-hole hitter Monica Miller walked and stole second.
Stewart then hit a soft line drive down the first base line that kicked foul, but hit the lip of the grass and rolled back fair. Byng second baseman Cailee Canada alertly picked up the ball and stepped on first for the second out of the inning, but Kile raced home on the play, giving Roff a 2-0 lead.
Miller tried to score on a wild pitch, but the ball caromed nicely off the bottom of the backstop, right back to Byng catcher Mahgen Boissenin, who easily tagged the Roff runner out to end the inning.
The Lady Pirates missed out on a couple of early scoring opportunities. In the first, Byng got runners at first and second with two outs on base knocks by Owens and Taylor Haley but couldn’t get a run home. Then in the second, the hosts had runners at second and third with two outs before Canida got out of that predicament with one of her seven strikeouts.
Byng got three of its hits — including one by the red-hot Boissenin — in the first two inning but Canida clamped down from there. The Roff hurler — who tossed a no-hitter against Colbert a week ago — allowed just two more hits over the final five innings and seemingly got stronger as the game progressed.
Meanwhile, Roff got three more insurance runs off Byng reliever Makara Shaw, who entered the game in the top of the fifth and retired the Lady Tigers in order.
Roff touched Shaw for a pair of sixth-inning scores on the strength of hits by Kelley, Miller and Stewart. Kile and Stewart had RBIs in the frame.
Roff threatened to break the game wide open in the seventh, loading the bases with two outs. McCoy walked to force in a run before Shaw got a groundout to second to end the inning.
Byng spoiled Canida’s bid for a second straight shutout in the bottom of the seventh with a little help from lady luck. Ashley Scott led off with a single and went to second on a ground ball back to the pitcher by Layna Abbott. After a slight bobble at first, Scott rounded second and was forced into a run-down. After at least six throws back and forth by Roff fielders, Scott finally slid head-first into third base and was safe after a bang-bang play. Owens then drove in the lone Byng run on a groundout to shortstop before Canida fittingly ended the game with a strikeout.
Canida (7-1) helped her own cause with a three-hit performance at the plate while Stewart, Kelley and Kile all added two hits each in Roff’s 11-hit attack.
Bossenin, who had five hits in Byng’s last three contests, was the only Lady Pirate with two hits off Canida.
Byng’s Jacey Huckeby made the defensive play of the game in the top of the third. Roff’s Lauren Trimmer pounded the ball toward Huckeby in left field and it looked like it would get over her head for extra bases. But Huckeby made the catch while facing the wall, fell down and still hung on to the ball to record the out.
