Velma —
Services for A.L. Loray Spurgin, 89, Velma, are 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 5, 2012, at Velma Baptist Church, the Rev. Carroll D. Milner officiating. Burial follows at New Velma Cemetery.
All visitation will be at Grantham Velma Chapel starting Thursday from 12-8 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m.until 8 p.m. The family will receive friends at Velma Chapel Friday from 5:30-7:00 p.m.
Mr. Spurgin died Wednesday, May 2, 2012, at a Duncan hospital. He was born April 17, 1928, in Loco, Okla., to L.R. and Dovie Spurgin.
He graduated from Alma High School in 1941. After a time at Murray State College, where he was a member of the MSC football team, he entered the U.S. Army. A Bronze Star recipient, he served as an armored gun-car commander in the 86th Calvary Reconnaissance Troop, Mechanized , in the European and Pacific Theaters.
He and Cleo Dunn were married June 29, 1945. Together they raised four children and lived in the Velma area for more than 60 years. He was a member of Countryside Free Will Baptist Church in Velma where he served on the deacon board and taught senior Sunday school for many years. Over the years he mentored many novice pastors and young deacons as they began their service to the church. His service to others included serving on the organizing board of Velma Water District.
In 1944, he retired from Cigna Energy as production superintendent.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Delpha Ward.
Survivors include his wife Cleo, of the home; and their four children: Myrna Sam and husband Steve of Fort Worth, Texas, Mary Berry and husband Jack of Ada, Paula Crawford and husband Steven of Roff, and David Spurgin and wife Renee of Velma; seven grandchildren, Chris Woodall of Fort Worth, Brooke Kingsley of Boulder, Colo., Blake Crawford and Brent Crawford both of Roff, Courtney Bratton of Ada, Lyndsi Sam of Fort Worth, and Brandon Spurgin of Velma; step-grandchildren, Raymon Sam and wife Joanna of Thackerville and Andy Sam and wife Elizabeth of Pauls Valley; 14 great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren; a brother, Monte Spurgin of Duncan; a nephew, Terry Ward and wife Bridget of Pineville, La.; his sister-in-law, Lavana Turnbow of Mena, Ark.; a niece Judi Bennett of Hurst, Texas; and many other relatives and friends.
Bearers will be his grandsons.
