ECU cross-country teams to host GAC Championships

Ada —

The East Central University men’s and women’s cross-country teams will be hosting the 2012 Great American Conference Championships Saturday at the Pontotoc Technology Center in Ada.

The men’s race is slated to start at 9:30 a.m., the women follow at 10:30 a.m. and the awards start at 11:30 a.m.

The Tigers, who were picked as the 2012 preseason favorites, will be competing against Harding, Southern Arkansas and Arkansas-Monticello.

Junior Cale Eidson is one of the top two runners on the men’s side, with Southern Arkansas’ Mickey Hammer.  The three have competed against each other three times this season, with Eidson beating Hammer by 45 seconds at the ECU Tiger Chase – the same course that will be used this weekend.

The Lady Tigers, who were picked second in the preseason poll, will be running against Harding, Arkansas Tech, Southwestern Oklahoma State, Southern Arkansas, Ouachita Baptist, Henderson State, Southeastern Oklahoma State and Arkansas-Monticello.

ECU is the only women’s team with two runners among the top eight performances in the GAC this season; sophomore ReGina Germaine and senior Samantha Bartlett.  Germaine recently claimed her second GAC Runner of the Week honor for her performance at the Arkansas Chile Pepper Festival.

Northwestern Oklahoma State and Southern Nazarene will also be at the meet but competing as individuals, since they are not eligible due to their provisional membership status with the league.
