Wynnewood —
Konawa head coach Gordon Garner figured his team would have to at least contend in the rebound battle to have a chance to upset Empire in a Class 2A Regional Tournament consolation game Thursday afternoon at Wynnewood High School.
Boy was he wrong.
Despite an amazing 14-point, 27-rebound effort by Empire senior Alyssa George (who added three steals), the Lady Tigers scrapped and clawed their way to an improbable 61-53 victory.
The Konawa girls improved to 9-17 on the year and will play in another 2A Regional elimination game against the Amber-Pocasset-Rush Springs loser today at 1:30 p.m. in Rush Springs. The Lady Bulldogs are finished at 14-11.
The game was nip-and-tuck the entire way as neither team could gain more than a six-point advantage until Konawa finally pulled away late from the free-throw line.
The Lady Tigers trailed 31-28 at halftime and Garner said he was none too pleased.
“We came out and did everything I told them not to do. I told them to win this game, we had to rebound and take care of the basketball. We did neither,” he said. “After the first half, I was probably never so mad at a team, and I told them that.”
