Konawa clubs sweep past host Vanoss

John Hurt, coach of the Vanoss Wolves had a good game plan to slow down the more talented Konawa Tigers, and it even worked.

For a little while. 

In the end, his team would wind up losing to Konawa by the identical score of the girls game between the two teams, 40-28, Tuesday night inside the Kenneth D. Smith Memorial Field House.

The Wolves slowly built a first quarter lead of 9-2, and they were doing a good job of limiting the Tigers' possessions. But then it all fell apart on a technical foul on senior Colton Rankin.

Justin Little had just cut the lead by one to 9-3, hitting the back end of a two-shot foul.

On the trip back down-court, Zach Snow caught Rankin holding the ball in front of him and rushed in to tie up the ball. Rankin, angry with himself for allowing it to happen, slammed the ball hard onto the floor.

 The Konawa Lady Tigers utilized an effective press to frustrate the Vanoss Lady Wolves Tuesday night inside the Kenneth D. Smith Memorial Field House en route to a methodical 40-28 victory for the visitors.

"This is a tough place to come into," said Konawa girls Coach, Gordon Garner. "They do a good job and they give it everything they've got."

 "We had several kids slowed by sickness," he said. "We're not making any excuses.  "We knew they'd make a run at us, and they did."

Maybe so, but the Lady Tigers were never in any serious danger after taking a 15-6 lead at the end of a quarter and carrying a 10-point cushion (24-14) to the dressing room.

  • Cougar Composers Cougars coach takes no chances

    At approximately 2:30 p.m. Wednesday the Ada Cougars headed up to the soccer field for practice. At 2:50 they headed back down the hill and to the safety of ‘The Dunham’ the huge indoor practice facility. Lightning had been recorded some 14 miles west and head coach Matt Weber was taking no chances.
