The Ada Lady Cougars outscored Durant 24-3 from beyond the arc and used a big third quarter to brush off the Lady Lions 48-27 Tuesday night inside the Cougar Activity Center.
Ada, ranked No. 19 in Class 4A, improved to 9-5 on the year heading into the 2013 Newcastle Invitational. The Lady Cougars will meet Woodward at 1:40 p.m. today in a first-round matchup.
It’s a good thing the hosts had such a nice advantage from long range. Durant outscored Ada 16 to ZERO from the free-throw line. The Lady Lions connected on 16-of-21 tries, while Ada made none because the Lady Cougars attempted none.
In other words, the Lady Cougars didn’t try a free throw in 32 minutes while watching their opponent knock down 16-of-21 free shots.
Ada head coach Christie Jennings said she’s never seen that happen before.
“It’s unbelievable that we didn’t shoot a free throw,” she said. “I don’t think I’ve ever coached in a game where we didn’t shoot a free throw.”
Ada post player Aaliyah Blakley, who drew a crowd nearly every time she touched the ball, had 14 field goal attempts. Even she didn’t get any charity shots.
