ECU basketball teams return home tonight

Ada — The East Central University women’s and men’s basketball teams are back in action tonight as they entertain Southwestern Christian University on Wayne Cobb Court inside the Kerr Activities Center.

The women’s game tips off at 6 p.m. with the men to follow at 8 o’clock.

The Lady Tigers, of head coach Kent Franz, bring a 2-2 record into Tuesday’s action after knocking off Texas A&M-Kingsville 66-62 at home on Saturday, behind senior guard Casi Rawls’ 19 points, eight rebounds, nine assists and five steals.

Laura Harris and Indhira Ramirez added 12 points apiece as Harris sank 4-of-8 shots from 3-point land and Ramirez was 6-of-11 on close-range tries.

Rawls leads ECU with a 16.8 scoring average and also tops the squad in assists (4.3 average) and steals (4.5). She needs just 82 points to reach 1,000 in her career.

Ramirez is next with a 9.5 scoring average and redshirt freshman Ashley Robison is at 9.3.

Southwestern Christian’s women are 4-5 on the season and led by Danyel Moses at 13.1, followed by Sheirra Bruner (10.1) and Brandie Sandy (10.0).

The Eagles are in their first year of NAIA competition after spending the past several years in the National Christian College Athletic Association.

Coach Joe Redmond’s Tigers are 4-1 after knocking off Texas A&M-Kingsville at home on Saturday, behind Jamal Edwards’ 15 points.

ECU owned a commanding 43-23 advantage on the boards as senior Antwone Snead led the way with 14 rebounds while Denarius Darby finished with 11 to go with his 10 points.

Darby tops the Tiger scoring chart with a 14.2 average and Edwards is at 12.5. Snead leads the team with an 8.3 rebounding average and Edwards is at 8.2.

Southwestern Christian’s men bring a 1-3 record into Tuesday’s action.

The Eagles are led by Josh Gamblin’s 16.8 scoring average, followed by Riemond Prince (14.3) and Greg Block (12.5). Prince is the team’s top rebounder with a 6.0 average.

After Tuesday’s play, the ECU squads visit Midwestern State on Thursday night in Wichita Falls, Texas, and Tarleton State on Saturday in Stephenville, Texas.



ECU's Rawls named LSC North Defensive Player of the Week

 ADA — East Central University guard Casi Rawls was named Lone Star Conference North Women's Defensive Player of the Week on Monday for her play during the Lady Tigers’ 66-62 home victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday.

Rawls, a 5-4 senior out of Lawton and Elgin High School, recorded a game-leading five steals to go with 19 points, nine assists and eight rebounds (five on the defensive end) as ECU improved to 2-2 on the season.

She only had two turnovers in 36 minutes of play.
