As Ada coach Ron Anderson walked off the floor at the end of his team’s 63-57 victory over Duncan, he shook his head and muttered, “I’ll never do that again.”
What Anderson will never do again is sit down most of his starters after building a 21-point lead on Tuesday with little more than half a quarter to play.
Who’d have “thunk it” after the Cougars outscored the Demons 17-3 in the third quarter? They had broken open a close 33-32 game at the half and left Ada on top 50-35 after three.
Not much changed early in the fourth, with the Cougars cruising to a 60-39 advantage with less than four minutes to play on a shot by sophomore Cory Kilby.
“We were having fun, but I also knew our guys were getting tired,” Anderson said. “It wasn’t so much trying to get new players in as it was getting the starters out so they’d be fresh when we start district (against Dickson) Friday.
“I guess when I put my subs in, I thought he (Demons’ coach Mikel Davison) would probably throw in the towel and put his subs, in too. But they started smelling blood, and they got after us.”
