ECU women stuff Southern Arkansas

Ada —      The East Central University applied an 84-47 beatdown to Great American cellar dweller Southern Arkansas Saturday inside the Kerr Activity Center.

     The dominant victory just goes to show how far apart the Lady Tigers are from the bottom of the conference standings.

     The Lady Tigers had 22 assists on 32 baskets and shot a blistering 32-of-56 from the field (57.1 percent).

     "We're continuing to share the basketball with one another — making the extra pass and finding the open guy," said East Central head coach Kent Franz. "And we shot the ball extremely well today."

     East Central won its seventh straight contest to improve to 10-2 overall and 5-1 in GAC play. Struggling Southern Arkansas remained winless at 0-11 and 0-6.

     The Lady Tigers have now outscored their past two foes — Arkansas-Monticello and the Lady Muleriders — by a combined 158-92 at home. Now, ECU packs its bags for three straight road games — at Northwestern in Alva Thursday, at Southwestern in Weatherford Saturday afternoon and then at Southern Nazarene Jan. 12 in Bethany.

     "This next week is a different deal now. We go on the road for three straight, and everything has to be a lot sharper. You've got to pay more attention to detail, and you just have to be better than they are when you go on the road," Franz said. "Everything's magnified when you go on the road. Different environments, hostile crowds."

     Against the Lady Muleriders, ECU gave up the first bucket of the game but then scored 10 straight points to grab a 10-2 lead at the 15:12 mark of the opening period. The Lady Tigers followed with 12-3 surge and pushed their lead to 22-5 on a jumper by Ada High product Erin Walling at the 10:19 mark of the first half.

     "It was nice to not have to be too stressed out about the outcome of the game. We got it in hand pretty early," Franz said.

     It got worse for Southern Arkansas. A demoralizing 16-3 surge capped by a 3-pointer by Ashley Robison and a Dilan Webster jumper gave the host an insurmountable 30-point bulge at 38-8 with 5:58 remaining before halftime.

     The Lady Tigers continued to pour it on in the second half and by the time Taylor Fischer scored at the 9:13 mark of the second half, the ECU lead had ballooned to 74-26.

     Walling may have had her coming-out party for the Lady Tigers. The ECU sophomore scored a game-high 16 points (off the bench), hit 6-of-10 field goals and 2-of-4 3-pointers while also dishing out four assists without a turnover.

     "She played pretty well. And it wasn't just in the scoring department. It was probably her all-around best game," Franz said. "We had pretty good balance today again."

     Webster added 14 points off the pine, while McCown scored 10. Robison added eight rebounds and five points for ECU.

     Bria Snowden tallied 15 points to lead the Lady Muleriders but hit just 5-of-19 field goals. As a team, Southern Arkansas finished 17-of-67 (25.4 percent) from the field.

     It was the fourth time this season that ECU has held an opponent to fewer than 50 points.

    At approximately 2:30 p.m. Wednesday the Ada Cougars headed up to the soccer field for practice. At 2:50 they headed back down the hill and to the safety of ‘The Dunham’ the huge indoor practice facility. Lightning had been recorded some 14 miles west and head coach Matt Weber was taking no chances.
