ECU baseball team defeats Oklahoma Christian

For the first time in 2013 the East Central University baseball team has earned two-straight wins after a 7-3 victory over Oklahoma Christian at Tiger Field. The win is the second-straight overall and the second-straight over the Eagles (15-10) in the past week.

The Tigers (7-19) were led by senior Mac Grace, two tallied three hits, scored a run and added two RBIs. Grace was one of three players with multi-hit games, with senior Justin Sutherland and junior Jake Caton each adding two hits.

ECU tallied nine hits in the game, with seven RBIs.

Sophomore Gerry Sifuentes started the game for the Tigers, going 4.2 innings, allowing seven hits, two runs and striking out one batter. Senior Hernan Vivas earned the win on the mound, with 2.1 innings of action. Junior Robert Cave threw the last two innings for ECU.

OC was the first to get on the board in the top of the second inning, going up 0-1.

The Tigers then took the lead for good in the bottom of the third with a three-run inning. Senior Sam Malchar drew a walk with one out and senior Benny Woodard was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Caton then hit a triple to the fence at left center to score the first two runs. Grace added a double to left center a batter later to score the third run of the game.

The Eagles cut the lead to one (3-2) in the top of the fifth, but ECU added the winning run in the bottom of the fifth. Caton was hit by a pitch and stole second. He was brought home on a single down the left field line by Grace for the 4-2 lead.

The Tigers added another run in the bottom of the sixth. Sutherland walked and Watase singled to short to put runners on. Senior Andrew Olson then reached on an error that allowed Sutherland to score.

ECU added another insurance run in the bottom of the seventh to go up 7-2. Caton singled through the right side and was put out when Grace reached on a fielder’s choice. Grace advanced to second on a pass ball to put him in scoring position for Lavender’s single to the right side. Sutherland scored the final run of the game with a single to right field.

The Tigers held OC scoreless in the eighth, but allowed a run in the ninth before ECU ended the game on a double play for the 7-3 final.

ECU will return to Great American Conference action today and Saturday when they travel to Southern Nazarene. Today’s game is set for a 2 p.m. start and a double-header is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m.

 

Women’s Tennis Returns Home for GAC Match

ADA – After going 3-2 a week ago, the East Central University women’s tennis team will be at the ECU Tennis Courts, Saturday, March 23 for a 1:30 p.m. match with Arkansas Tech.

The Lady Tigers (3-4, 1-0 GAC) played five matches last week after being idle for two weeks. Saturday’s match starts the bulk of the ECU season. The Lady Tigers will play 11 matches over the next month.

The Golden Suns are currently 5-3 overall and 3-0 in the GAC after winning their last four matches, all at home. ATU has not been on the road since Feb. 24 and is 1-2 when playing away from home this season. The Golden Suns last match was a 9-0 win over John Brown (March 14).

  • Cougar Composers Cougars coach takes no chances

    At approximately 2:30 p.m. Wednesday the Ada Cougars headed up to the soccer field for practice. At 2:50 they headed back down the hill and to the safety of ‘The Dunham’ the huge indoor practice facility. Lightning had been recorded some 14 miles west and head coach Matt Weber was taking no chances.
