Nolan Fanning wrapped up a huge day at the plate with a two-out RBI double to cap a two-run seventh-inning rally, and the Ada Post 72 Braves edged Stillwater, 8-7, in the nightcap of their Monday doubleheader.
The Braves, who came into the twinbill having lost 10 of their previous 11 games, scored five runs in the seventh to also take the opener, 14-9. With the two wins, the Post 72 squad improved to 5-10 heading into a tournament in Omaha, Neb., Thursday through Sunday. The Braves will play their first two pool play contests Thursday, including the tournament opener at 8 a.m.
“We came up with a lot of big two-out hits,” first-year Post 72 coach Chris Montgomery said after seeing his young squad come from behind to win both games Monday. “We got five or six runs in both games with two outs, and we got three big two-out hits in a row to win the last game.
“Our pitchers did a good job of damage control to hold (Stillwater) to one or two runs in an inning,” he added. “It was a good way to bounce back before heading to Omaha.”
Game 2
Ada Braves 8, Stillwater 7
Stillwater led 6-2 after four innings, but the Braves scored two runs in the fifth — the first on Fanning’s solo home run — and added two more in the sixth, with an RBI single by Kade Curry the big hit in that inning.
In the seventh, Caleb Martin singled with two outs and scored the tying run on a double by Tupelo’s Brandon Maggia, who earlier in the day committed to play his college baseball at East Central University. Maggia then scored on Fanning’s double, and Dakota Schafer came on in relief of winning pitcher Caleb Dubler (1-2) to strike out two of the three batters he faced in the bottom of the inning and earn the save.
Fanning finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs, and Maggia and Martin — whose two-run homer in the third gave the Braves their first runs of the game after Stillwater had built a 5-0 lead — added two hits and two RBIs apiece Montgomery’s club recorded its third win in as many tries against Stillwater this season.
Game 1
Ada Braves 14, Stillwater 9
The Braves trailed 6-4 after three innings, then led 9-7 before Stillwater tied the score with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. In the seventh, Fanning and Maggia both had RBI doubles, and Tyler Robinson and Tim Johnson scored in the inning on passed balls.
Fanning, who leads the Braves with five home runs through 15 games, had a solo shot to highlight a two-run second-inning rally that wiped a 1-0 Stillwater lead, andMaggia’s RBI double and Dubler’s RBI single (which scored pinch runner Mason Girdley) were the big blows in a three-run sixth-inning outburst that erased a 7-6 deficit.
Taz Marris gave up the two runs in the sixth that tied the game, but he picked up his first win of the summer after the Braves ralied in the seventh. Logan Palmer shut out Stillwater in the bottom of the inning to seal the victory.
Maggia had three hits and two RBIs, and Fanning and Cody Robinson (who also doubled twice) added two hits apiece in the victory.
