Konawa girls cruise past Coalgate

Coalgate —      The Konawa Lady Tigers jumped all over the Coalgate High girls team in the opening period en route to a 59-37 thrashing of the Lady Wildcats here Friday night.

Fueled by an aggressive full-court press and a harassing defense, Konawa was up by 11 at the end of a quarter, 16-5.

"We opened with a press and constant pressure," said Konawa coach Gordon Garner. "We had to do something. We're not very large with our two five-footers, but I was pleased with the way we played."

By halftime, it was a 31-21 Konawa lead. The second was Coalgate's best quarter by far, scoring 16 points, or exactly the same number of points the Konawa defense allowed the Lady Wildcats in the entire second half.

Konawa scored another 28 points in the second half to win easily.

Brooke Snow's 20-point scoring output, combined with Brittany Galimba's 15 points and eight steals, kept Coalgate at bay on its home court.

Snow didn't just score, she poured in a dozen of her points from behind the arc on four 3-pointers.

Erin Isaacs and Danielle Khoury limited the Lady Wildcats offensively with a half dozen rebounds apiece.

The win was the fifth against eight losses for Konawa, which enters tournament play Monday against Tupelo in the Tupelo Invitational.
