Ada wrestlers win at McAlester

McAlester —      The Ada Cougars crowned two individual champions – sophomore Marwin Dickerson at heavyweight and junior Danny Lamb at 182 pounds – in capturing the team championship of the two-day McAlester Wrestling Invitational on Saturday.

It was the first tournament victory for Ada since 2010, when the Cougars earned the title of that same tourney.

Ada was followed in the team standings by host McAlester, Catoosa, Durant, Ardmore and Talihina in the six-team event.

All 17 Cougars who competed in the pool-play tournament placed fifth or better. Six Ada wrestlers finished second, six took third, two were fourth and one was fifth.

Dickerson’s run to the heavyweight championship was not only an impressive 5-0 effort, but all five came on falls. Lamb was 4-1, but despite the one loss, he battled his way back to capture the individual crown at 182 pounds.

“This was a good start to a long month. I was proud of what we saw and happy with the way we wrestled,” said Ada head coach Kyle Bohannon. “It was a good way to start the month of January. We just need to keep improving and competing to get where we need to be by regionals.”

Earning runner-up efforts for the Cougars were sophomore Luke Johnston (113 pounds), freshman Chad Whittington (126), senior Hunter Bedsole (170), sophomore Colton Lancaster (182), junor Mark Morganthaler (195) and junior Royce Garvin (220).

“I was really pleased with Bedsole and the way he wrestled. He was 3-2 and wrestled a great finals match, improving from Friday to Saturday,” Bohannon said. “I was proud of our freshman placing and getting wins at the high school level. Everyone we took placed, and I’m excited for that. To have this success is something we can build off of now.”

Taking third for Ada were sophomore Giovanni Gutierrez (132 pounds), sophomore Austin Feezel (138), freshman Levi Grimes (160), junior Garrett Bacon (170), sophomore Tanner Jack (195) and sophomore Thomas Jim (heavyweight).

Placing fourth for the Cougars were freshman Damion Hardcastle (145 pounds) and sophomore Will Speed (160). Freshman Riley Daniels was fifth at 106 pounds.

Ada’s next action will be Tuesday, as it hosts a triangular with Duncan and McAlester. Duncan and McAlester will square off in a dual at 5 p.m., followed by Ada against Duncan in another dual. Ada and McAlester will meet in the final dual of the night.
