The heat was on Mannford and will be again tonight

They say rumors spread faster than wildfire. Such was the case, literally, at Mannford. The Cougars' opponent Friday was on fire all around the town located on Keystone Lake, but the the city proper was spared.

Rumors claimed Pirate Field was touched by the fire, partially burnt off at one end. One rumor even professed the football squad showed up to defend the field. Not so, said Sand Springs Leader Sports Editor Kirk McCracken, who covers the Pirates.

A week ago some 400 families who saw their homes wiped out by wildfires had a reason to celebrate — joining together for Homecoming.

Dozens of students started the school year with nothing, including members of the football program.

No. 72 at left tackle, Isaac Cook, was one such victim. His home is gone, replaced by a sign of support, burned memories and a camper, which which served as the Cook's temporary home.

Cook said he was out of town during the early August inferno. When he came back it  was gone, everything was gone. The same goes for Jaci Lawless, sophomore trainer for the team.
