A little something for everyone awaits at beef and ranch expo

Ada —

The 2012 Southeast Oklahoma Farm and Ranch Show will kick off this Friday at the Pontotoc County Agri-plex.

The expo will get under way Friday evening at 4 p.m. with a fitting clinic conducted by Bob May, a Purina ambassador. At 5:30 p.m., a complimentary hamburger dinner will be sponsored by Citizens Bank of Ada and at 6:30 a team fitting contest will get started.

So what is “fitting”?

Anyone who has every visited a livestock show has seen it but probably didn’t know the process had a formal name.

When a competitor — or a team of competitors — combs, brushes, blow-dries, and fluffs the tail of show animals, it is called “fitting.” Proper nutrition and feeding of animals will be taught as well, officials said.

Farm equipment, recreational vehicles, all-terrain and four-wheelers, gardening tips, and plenty of vendors — from feed stores to construction companies — will be on hand to show you the latest and greatest contraptions and widgets to make your garden grow or to keep livestock in a designated area without four ugly strands of barbed wire fencing.

The Southeast District Invitational Beef Expo also will be a huge part of the function. While competitors and their animals will begin showing up Friday afternoon, competition will begin Saturday at 10 a.m. at the complex, located at 1700 North Broadway in Ada.

Oklahoma State University Extension Educator Justin McDaniel said organizers are expecting about 160 entries in three classes: Supreme Heifer, Grand Champion Prospect and Grand Champion Steer. Students who are members of 4-H clubs and Future Farmers of America (FFA) will be competing for $500 top prize money and $250 for a second place finish.

“Competitors are eligible from a 19-county region, basically south from I-40 and east from I-35,” McDaniel said.

For folks who want to shop for a four-wheeler, or get garden tips, or just browse the booths, admission is free and doors open at 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday.
