Miller waives right to hearing; next court date set March 28

Ada —

Former Dallas Thunder public address announcer and former Ada resident, Jim Miller went before District Judge C. Steven Kessinger Friday, and along with his attorney, Mack Martin of Oklahoma City, waived his right to a preliminary hearing.

Miller is now set for formal arraignment before District Judge Tom Landrith at 1 p.m. March 28.

Miller told Kessinger it was his decision to waive his preliminary hearing and the judge then entered a bind-over order.

Miller is accused of six acts of lewd and indecent acts in front of three children.

The acts are alleged to have taken place in Harrah and in Pontotoc counties.

The allegations first surfaced while he was employed as a teacher and tennis coach at Harrah High School when the Department of Human Services alerted the Harrah Police Department.

Miller is accused of masturbating in front the children. Two of the victims said when they reached the age of 11, the acts stopped.

An investigator said Miller admitted the other victim walked in on him several times, but insisted that it was always accidental. The accused further admitted on at least one occasion he did continue to masturbate while the last victim was present, but insisted it was so the victim wouldn’t think what he was doing was wrong and grow up with issues.

According to the warrant, the accused admitted the last time the victim “accidentally’ walked in on him and saw anything was the beginning of April 2012.

Miller was one of about 100 original applicants for the Thunder public announcer’s job when the team first moved to Oklahoma City from Seattle. He survived several rounds of elimination before eventually being named the winner.

Until the alleged criminal acts, he remained the Thunder’s announcer.                                                                                          Two of the victims, now in their late teens, came forward after the Harrah incident came to light and told Pontotoc County Deputy Travis Wilson the same thing happened to them when they were younger. Those alleged incidents occurred seven to eight years earlier, Christian said in 2012.

According to the arrest warrant, Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation agents seized a computer from Miller’s home which contained hundreds of pornographic images.
