Food cooperative begins in Ada

Ada —

Sara Blackwood pushed a small bag of cinnamon glazed pecans toward a reporter, urging him to try one of the nuts.

“You can just tell the difference in the taste from a local pecan that has no preservatives on it,” Blackwood said during a recent interview. “Compare that to the flavor of something you get out of Walmart and it’s a little cheaper, too.”

A Stratford-based farmer, Blackwood sells her products at a local farmers market. Her interest in buying and selling locally grown food recently prompted her to volunteer with the Oklahoma Food Cooperative, an Oklahoma City-based organization that brings producers and customers together in an online farmers market.

Blackwood recently became the site manager for the cooperative’s newly established pickup point at Golden Grain Farms Bakery and Produce, 14096 County Road 3590 in Ada. She said the organization’s Ada customers picked up their orders at Golden Grain for the first time this month, and they were glad to have a delivery site so close to home.
