ADA — A quarter featuring Chickasaw National Recreation Area’s Lincoln Bridge will be minted in November 2011.

A release from Chickasaw Nation said the quarter is part of a series of “America the Beautiful” Quarters program.  The coins to be minted in 2011 feature various national parks across the nation, including Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania, Glacier National Park in Montana, Olympic National Park in Washington and Vicksburg National Military Park in Mississippi.

Five coins were also minted in 2010 as part of the national park series, including Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas, Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, Yosemite National Park in California, Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona and Mount Hood National Forest in Oregon.

In all, 56 coins will be minted as part of the “America the Beautiful” program.

“Chickasaw people have a long history of appreciation and respect for this incredibly beautiful and significant area,” Chickasaw Nation Gov. Bill Anoatubby said of Chickasaw National Recreation Area.  “We are very pleased this area was chosen to be part of this program.”

The release said the Chickasaw National Recreation Area is a big part of Chickasaw Nation’s cultural heritage.

“Chickasaw people came to the ‘peaceful valley of rippling waters’ in the late 1830s after removal to Indian Territory,” the release said.  “The Atoka agreement among the federal government and Chickasaw and Choctaw nations gave 629.33 acres of land to the federal government with the understanding that the land and the water would remain under the control of the United States government and be protected for future generations.”

This area would become Sulphur Springs Reservation in 1902, Platt National Park and, in 1976, Chickasaw National Recreation Area.

Lincoln Bridge, featured on the quarter, was built in 1909 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth, the release said.
