Commission, VFD reps argue over tax

Ada — Pontotoc County volunteer firefighters will have no wiggle room if they are going to land a proposed sales tax increase on the ballot for the Nov. 6 general election.

A four-man delegation representing all 14 county fire departments attended Monday’s Pontotoc County Commission meeting to present a resolution calling for a tax hike of three-sixteenths of a cent, not only to fund upgrades in those departments but also to provide money for Call-A-Ride and county-operated nutrition centers.

But after almost an hour of reviewing documents presented by Vanoss VFD Chief Rance Walker and three other county firefighters and another 45 minutes of discussion that at times became confrontational, the commission found a few minor changes still needed to be made to the resolution. The measure will have one last chance for commission approval Monday before the Aug. 22 filing deadline.
