The Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) has granted Three-year Accreditation with Commendation to the cancer program at Valley View Regional Hospital. The program has been assisting patients in their battles with cancer for more than 25 years.
Valley View offers treatment for many different types of cancer. The most commonly diagnosed cancers at Valley View are prostate, lung, breast, colo-rectal, and bladder.
Valley View’s highly skilled oncology team works hard to meet the needs of patients and uses many types of treatment for cancers including chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgical treatments, hospital officials said.
Valley View Regional Hospital received a Three-Year Accreditation with Commendation following the onsite evaluation by a physician surveyor during which the program demonstrated a commendation level of compliance with one or more standards that represent the full scope of the cancer program (cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, clinical services, research, community outreach, and quality improvement).
“Obtaining this accreditation is a very tedious process. The evaluation is only one day, however, the preparation is continuous,” said Dr. Bruce VanHorn, medical director of the cancer registry program for Valley View. “Considering there are only 14 accredited programs in the state, we feel honored to be included in this elite group of cancer programs.”
There are currently more than 1,500 CoC accredited cancer programs in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, representing close to 30 percent of all hospitals. Of that 30 percent, hospitals diagnose and/or treat approximately 80 percent of all newly diagnosed cancer patients each year.
The CoC Accreditation Program sets quality of care standards for cancer programs and reviews the programs to ensure they conform to those standards. Accreditation by the CoC is given only to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to providing the highest level of quality cancer care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance.
“Receiving approval with commendations helps Valley View maintain our high standing,” said Lindsay Snow, RHIA, CTR and cancer registrar for 10 years. “It reinforces our commitment to provide quality health care to our community.”
To maintain accreditation, facilities with CoC-accredited cancer programs must undergo an on-site review every three years.
