For 15 years the American Cancer Society has been offering a toll-free number unlike any other. The National Cancer Information Center, at 800-227-2345, is the only cancer information hotline that operates every minute of every day — including weekends and holidays — to provide what cancer patients and caregivers need more than anything else: information.
What makes the NCIC unique is that callers can access the most accurate, up-to-date information that is tailored to their specific needs, and can work with a specialist who speaks the caller’s preferred language. This service is free and confidential, and is supported by donors’ gifts to the Society.
As part of the society’s effort to turn what we know about cancer into what we do about it, the NCIC anticipates everything a caller might need, and the Cancer Information Specialists who interact with callers are highly trained. Callers may learn about specific types of cancer, treatment and treatment options, how to manage symptoms, cancer prevention and detection guidelines, and many other topics. Perhaps most importantly, callers can learn about resources available close to home, such as support groups and patient services.
