In October they will take it to the next level at the Fourth Annual Empire City International Mock Trial Tournament at New York University.
“Due to our success over the past five years, we have been chosen to compete at the Empire City Intemational Mock Tríal Toumament among 30 of the best teams from four different countríes, as well as numerous teams across our nation,” said coach/teacher Angie Dean.
The 10-member team and sponsors will travel to New York Oct. 13-17 for five days to compete while learning more about the legal system by collaborating with top scholars from New York University as well as the nation’s top mock trial teams.
The team is composed of Stephen Miller, Kaitlyn Kaiser, Michael Smola, Tiffany Cathey, Jasmine Bayatfar and Chandler Teal.
Also, Meghan Whiting, Steffani Silva, Samantha Cannon and Corbin Mankin.
Due to the state and nationwide downturn in school funding, the students will be required to finance the trip individually. They will seek outside donations. Contríbution would help pay for toumament registration ($75/participant), hotel rooms ($300/participant), airfare ($300/participant) and meals ($200/participant).
“We feel very fortunate to live in such a wonderful conununity that supports its youth. We consider this opportunity as not only a chance to see new places and gain valuable life experíences, but it will also allow us exposure to the top mock tríal teams in the nation.,” Dean said. “There is no doubt that competing against such quality teams will help our team elevate to a new level oí competition.
“We believe this opportunity will allow for valuable courtroom experience that will in turn help us reach our ultimate goal, winning the state championship competition.”
