Ada —
The State Fair of Oklahoma may be over for another year, but the excitement continued for Jonathan Boeck, of Stonewall, when he picked up his canned items from the fair this week.
“I’m still excited that I was able to win a sweepstakes ribbon this year,” explained Boeck. Not only did he win one, but of the five sweepstakes awards in the home preservation division, Boeck won three of them.
So who says canning is just for grannies?
Not Boeck.
Although most would consider him a newbie in terms of experience, Boeck appears to be a fast learner from the looks of his winnings.
And, he’s loving every minute of his new-found hobby.
Just three years ago, Boeck and his wife, Jennifer, moved to the rural community of Lovelady, east of Ada, where Boeck took the notion to start his first garden.
Boeck attributes his most recent state fair success to the wealth of information he’s found on the internet and in canning books. “My grandpa Ed Boeck, of Tecumseh, was known for his great gardens, and my grandma Hattie Boeck always canned their fruits and vegetables, but, regretfully, I never had the chance to learn from them. It wasn’t until I started learning how to grow my own produce that I became increasingly interested in learning how to can,” said Boeck.
