Ada —
Cowboy Crisis Fund hosts its tenth annual fundraising event at Ada Elks Lodge Saturday, Feb. 25. Activities will include a special tribute to retired Oklahoma County District Attorney Bob Macy. Macy, a former Ada resident, was one of the founding members of Cowboy Crisis Fund and remained an active member until his passing last November. Nationally known storyteller and singer Red Steagall and actor Wilford Brimley will be on hand to pay tribute to Macy and to celebrate the Cowboy Crisis Fund’s ten years of success.
Brett Macy, event organizer, said the first Cowboy Crisis Fund auction and dance was held in February, 2003. “Ada native Bill Montin, Brimley and Macy, wanted to raise money for a local woman who lost part of her arm due to bone cancer,” Macy said. “Her insurance would not cover the cost of a prosthetic arm or the rehabilitation involved. The response and support of the Ada community was overwhelming, and the event was a huge success.”
Organizers decided to turn the fundraiser into an annual event to help local citizens who are having financial difficulties due to medical issues. To date, Brett Macy said Cowboy Crisis Fund has raised more than $700,000, which has been given back to area residents. In addition to the auction and dance, the organization has held golf tournaments and a team roping event to raise money.
“There is a small core group of volunteers who work year round to plan Cowboy Crisis events and distribute funds. This group kicks it into high gear in late fall to prepare for the February auction and dance. The community has continued to provide tremendous support, as evidenced by nearly 200 items donated for the auction each year,” said Brett Macy.
Auction items this year include a guided elk hunt, custom built spurs, two Billy Cook Saddles, a custom made Gist belt buckle, a sixteen foot utility trailer, a John Deere ZTR mower and a lawn mower/atv trailer.
The event begins at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25, at Ada Elks Lodge. Dinner is served at 7 p.m. with entertainment provided during the meal.
The tribute to Bob Macy, followed by a performance by Red Steagall, will lead the way to the live auction. Bidding wars in the silent auction room begin when the doors open and wrap up after the conclusion of the live auction. The evening will be capped with a dance featuring live music. Tickets are $50 each and there are still a limited number available. Donated auction items will be accepted up to the day of the event. To inquire about tickets or make a donation, phone Bill Montin at (580) 421-7993.
