Ada —
A lightning strike destroyed Ada radio station KYKC’s transmitter facility (100.1FM), Friday night around 9 p.m. as tornadoes and thunderstorms rolled through eastern Oklahoma. The station, which is located roughly six miles north of Ada, is off the air today as officials begin work on a temporary transmitter facility.
“From all appearances, the back-up generator took a direct lightning hit and started burning. That fire quickly spread to the actual transmission building which houses the transmitters,” said South Central Oklahoma Radio Enterprises general manager, Roger Harris.
Harris said the building was only partially destroyed by the fire, but the equipment was rendered useless due to the heat, smoke and water from the fire crews on the scene.
Crews began Saturday rigging a temporary, lower power transmitter which they believe will put the station back on the air by the end of the week. A permanent fix to put the station back on the air at 50,000 watts will take weeks.
Harris said there are no issues with other broadcast stations included in the South Central Oklahoma Radio Enterprises group. Those stations are: KADA (1230am and 99.3FM) KTLS (106.5FM) and KXFC (105.5FM).
