An Ada police officer helped save three people from a burning building early Friday morning.
Officer Mike Meeks noticed smoke coming from the eaves of the home at 916 Beverly St. and determined that people were inside, said Ada Fire Chief Marion Harris. Meeks knocked out the living room window so the occupants could escape, and two people started climbing through the broken window.
When firefighters arrived on the scene, Meeks was kicking open the front door so the occupants could walk out, but they were already climbing through the window, Harris said.
The firefighters helped two people escape through the window, then discovered a third person lying on the bathroom floor. The person was semiconscious and breathing, and firefighters pulled him out of the house.
He was transported to Valley View Regional Hospital for treatment, but the other two occupants had only minor injuries from climbing through the window. They both refused treatment.
The fire started because the occupants had left something on the stove, Harris said. The blaze started on the stove and spread to the walls and cabinets, then moved into the attic.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze within an hour, but the kitchen was damaged and there was extensive smoke damage throughout the house.
Harris said he did not have the occupants’ names.
