With the deadline for filing just two days away, Pontotoc County Commissioners finally passed a resolution Monday that will allow county volunteer fire departments to add a three-sixteenths-cent sales tax increase to the ballot for the Nov. 6 general election.
Commissioners Gary Starns from District 1 and Danny Davis from District 2 voted to approve the measure, while chairman Justin Roberts — a vocal opponent of the resolution since it was first presented to the board last month — was the lone vote against. If passed, the measure would provide money for training and equipment for county fire volunteer departments and funding for Call-A-Ride, county nutrition centers and the county's emergency management agency, with each of the 16 entities entitled to an equal share.
“I feel like the firemen did everything we’ve asked them to do,” Davis said in making the motion to approve the resolution. “I feel like we should give the public the opportunity to vote on it.”
