Red Cross offers disaster volunteer training in Ada

Pontotoc County Branch of American Red Cross, in cooperation with First Baptist Church of Ada, is offering two training classes for disaster volunteers on March 16. 

Disaster services overview will be offered from 9-11 a.m. at First Baptist Church located at 521 South Broadway and shelter operations will begin at 1 p.m. after an hour break for lunch. 

“If you are interested in becoming a disaster volunteer or in just knowing how you can help your community prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies and disasters, you should take disaster services overview,” said Angielee Wright, disaster specialist.  

This is a basic level course that provides an introduction to disaster services by the American Red Cross. It is intended for individuals and organizations interested in learning about volunteer opportunities in disaster preparedness and response. 

Shelter operations is designed to give participants an overview of the American Red Cross policies and procedures for setting up, running, and closing a shelter during a disaster.

“The purpose of this course is to prepare employees and volunteers of the American Red Cross and other agencies to manage shelter operations effectively and sensitively as a team while meeting the needs of people displaced as a result of a disaster,” Wright said. “This is geared not only to the Red Cross staff and volunteers but to other agencies, churches, and community leaders who will be working on shelter operations teams.”

“Our local volunteers are trained to provide a variety of disaster relief services for the people they help,” said Robin Outland, executive director.  “It is extremely rewarding work and the volunteers always say they get so much more from the people they help. Just like the Red Cross must always be prepared for emergencies, volunteers must also be ready prior to a disaster. The Red Cross offers training classes for them to be knowledgeable about what is involved in disaster response from the large scale hurricane responses to our number one and daily response to residential fires.”
