New county fair board member elected to post

Ada —

Pontotoc County Fair Board member Garrett Clark recently took office after his election to represent Pontotoc County District Three. Clark was elected Feb. 1.

District Three Commissioner Justin Roberts said three members are elected from each district to serve on the fair board.  He said commissioners could not put on fairs at Pontotoc County Agri-plex without the board.

“They take on a tremendous responsibility,” he said.  “There’s absolutely no way, if it was left strictly up to the commissioners, that we could ever make up for the work they do.”

Roberts said Pontotoc County Fair Board members prepare the Spring Livestock Show and county fairs at Pontotoc County Agri-plex.

“The fair board’s main goal is to provide residents of Pontotoc County with a county fair they can be proud of and will want to participate in,” said Oklahoma State University Extension Center Educator Janna Kelley. “Each year, thanks to this board, our fair has grown by leaps and bounds.”

Their duties include coordinating arenas and hiring judges. The members spend a lot of time working with members of 4-H, Future Farmers of America and OSU Extension Center staff.

“They spend 99 percent of their time with the kids involved in 4-H and Future Farmers of America (FFA),” Roberts said.  “They know them by name and watch them grow up.”

Kelley said her office works closely with the fair board to provide guidance.

Fair board members for district one include Tyler Rhynes, Todd Ray and John Murphy.  James Booth, Jeff Hayes and Brad Faust represent district two and district three members are Charles Morrow, Bill Britt and Garrett Clark.

Roberts said their experience is invaluable.  Morrow has served on the board since 1992. Britt has been on since 1997 and Murphy has been a part of Pontotoc County Fair Board since 1998.  Rhynes just recently replaced an open position left by former member Harvey Bain, who was part of the fair board since 1999.

“This group works tirelessly for nothing,” Kelley said.  “The only pay they receive is seeing the smiling faces of people visiting the fair each year.”
