Negotiations continue

City selected for juvenile facility not named

Ada —  President and CEO of Ada Jobs Foundation, Mike Southard, said the Office of Juvenile Affairs has selected a community for the proposed juvenile facility for which the city of Ada applied.

“The state is currently negotiating with a community that was selected,” Southard said at a Monday morning Pontotoc County commissioner meeting.

Southard said five communities applied but he didn’t indicate which community got the academy.

“Clinton and Avalon have been in the Oklahoman and Tulsa World and have expressed concern that the process wasn’t fair,” Southard said.  An article in Tulsa World quoted Clinton Mayor Allen Bryson stating OJA had not selected an applicant yet, despite saying a vendor would be selected by July 28.

“(OJA) has stated in their meetings that a community has been selected and that they are actively negotiating with that community,” Southard said.  “(The Tulsa World article) was misleading because it made it sound like no decision has been made but (OJA) is in the process.”

Other applicants for the facility were Custer City, Hennessey and Wakita.

At the meeting, commissioners also awarded a bid for a fiberglass water storage tank for the Lula Volunteer Fire Department.

After comparing the bids, Gary Starns, District 1 commissioner, made a motion to go with the cheapest, a $59,070 tank from Arrow Pump and supply.

Chad Letellier, Pontotoc County Emergency Management director, said the county’s hazard mitigation plan should be approved within 60 days.
