Suspect arrested in death of 18-year-old man

Ada —

Pottawatomie County authorities have arrested a suspect in the death of an 18-year-old kidnapping victim.

Jerod Murray, an 18-year-old man who has relatives around Asher, was booked into the Pottawatomie County Public Safety Center on Thursday after he was found a short distance from the victim’s body, said  Pottawatomie County Sheriff Mike Booth.

Investigators believe that Murray and the victim were both students at East Central University, but that has not been confirmed yet, Booth said. He added that authorities are not releasing the victim’s name at this time.

Booth said the Asher police chief called his office Thursday morning to report suspicious activity in a rural area near state Highways 177 and 59. When sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene, they found an 18-year-old man’s body about 4 or 5 feet away from a dark-colored pickup truck.

Authorities believe that Murray kidnapped the victim in the Ada area and brought him to Pottawatomie County, where he was killed, Booth said. He said the victim apparently died of a gunshot wound but did not specify where the wound was located.

The body has been taken to the medical examiner’s office in Oklahoma City for examination.

Sheriff’s deputies found Murray on a dirt road off SH 177, about 2 1/2 miles away from the crime scene, Booth said. He said Murray did not resist arrest.

Investigators from the Pottawatomie County District Attorney’s Drug and Violent Crime Task Force are processing the pickup truck and a semiautomatic handgun, which was found at the scene, Booth said. The case is still under investigation.
