Four Pontotoc County 4-H’ers took top honors when they were named state project winners and blue award group finalists at the 91st State 4-H Roundup that took place recently at Oklahoma State University.
Kayla Thomas, Roff, was named the state citizenship project winner. She received a $1,000 scholarship. Thomas is a member of the Roff Sr. 4-H Club, where she is active in the public speaking, leadership, citizenship, and fashion and fabrics project areas. An active 4-H’er for 10 years, Thomas has participated in 94 community service projects and has reached over 37,000 people through her workshops and classes.
Thomas has served as the Southeast District secretary, Pontotoc County Teen Leader, and Roff 4-H Club vice president. Some of her 4-H activities and honors include Pontotoc County 4-H Hall of Fame, Pontotoc County Top Sr. 4-Her and Citizenship Washington Focus delegate.
Other activities include Pre-Teen Oklahoma Jr. titleholder, East Central University academic scholarship recipient and a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority.
She attends East Central University and is the daughter of John and Teri Thomas.
Katelyn Wade, Byng, took the top honor in the advanced family and consumer sciences project. She was awarded a $1,000 scholarship sponsored by the OEAFCS and OAE4HA.
Wade has presented many programs on health and wellness during her six-year 4-H career. She started a “100 Mile Club" as an effort to fight childhood obesity and has made a difference in the health of the children of Pontotoc County
Her leadership roles include 4-H president, vice president and secretary. Some of her 4-H honors and activities include Kansas City Global Conference delegate, state record book scholarship in health and fitness and a 4-H jacket.
Other activities include Byng High School leadership and honor choir and a member of the National Junior Honor Society.
Wade attends Byng High School and is the daughter of Chance and Crystal Wade.
Alicia Daniel, Ada, was named to the Blue Award group, which recognizes the top 20 4-H members in the state. Daniel was awarded top 10 status out of the 20 members selected. She also received the Southeast District 4-H scholarship. Daniel, a seven-year veteran of 4-H, is a member of the Homeschool 4-H Club and is active in the citizenship and family and consumer sciences project areas. She wrote the grant for, founded and coordinated the Youth Educating Seniors program that trains students to teach workshops about nutrition and exercise to older adults.
She has held leadership roles on both the county and district level, including Pontotoc County Teen Leadership Team vice chairman, Southeast District vice president and action team member. Some of her 4-H activities include Citizenship Washington Focus delegate, Advanced Family and Consumer Sciences project winner, and Food Science project winner.
Other activities include attending Summer@Brown, a pre-college program at Brown University with a Dean’s scholarship, National Merit finalist and University Scholar with a full tuition scholarship to Oklahoma Baptist University.
Daniel is a sophomore at Oklahoma Baptist University and is the daughter of Mamie Thompson and the late David Daniel.
Sarah Burrows, Roff, was selected as a Blue Award group finalist. Her main 4-H projects include performing arts, citizenship, leadership and public speaking.
Sarah’s 4-H honors include Pontotoc County 4-H Hall of Fame, state performing arts project winner, Oklahoma 4-H Key Club, top senior 4-H member, senior achievement, I Dare You leadership award and delegate to Kansas City Global Conference, Denver Western Roundup and Washington, D.C.
Sarah is a member of the Fitzhugh Methodist Church, where she is a youth advocate. She has also served as the 2005 Pre-teen Oklahoma Senior Division titleholder. Burrows is a sophomore attending East Central University, where she is majoring in art. She is a member of Chi Omega sorority. Burrows is the daughter of Jay and Nelda Burrows, Roff.
