A Pontotoc County man has died of West Nile virus, prompting local health officials to warn residents to guard against contracting the mosquito-borne illness.
The man was a Pontotoc County resident who was at least 65 years old, Pontotoc County Health Department administrator Michael Echelle said Thursday. He said he could not provide any additional details of the case, including the date of death.
“Certainly, we want to extend our condolences to the family,” Echelle said. “We are saddened about this loss, and our sympathies go out to the family.”
The news raised the state’s death toll from West Nile virus to 12 people, making this the deadliest year on record for the mosquito-borne illness in Oklahoma. The state confirmed two other West Nile virus deaths this week, including a man younger than 65 in Cleveland County and a man older than 65 in Logan County.
