Day of prayer observed by city residents

Ada —  

An observance of the National Day of Prayer was held in Ada Thursday.

A nice gathering of area residents showed up for the event held on the east side of the Pontotoc County Courthouse. David Daniel, pastor, delivered the welcome speech.

Fernando Padilla prayed for the government and Sgt. Ross Galemore prayed for the military. Randall Christy, pastor, prayed for the media while Ada police officer Phillip Wood prayed for emergency services. Prayers for educational institutions, churches, marriages and families were said by pastors Shawn Wiebers, Temple Diehl and Zac Christian, followed by closing prayers and the singing of "America the Beautiful."

National Day of Prayer was designated by the Congress as a day when all Christians are asked to come together and pray, with emphasis being on their country. 

A bill proclaiming the National Day of Prayer was signed by then President Harry S. Truman in 1952. In 1988, former President Ronald Reagan signed a bill into law decreeing National Day of Prayer should be held on the first Thursday in May.

The original day of prayer was issued by the Continental Congress in 1775 to designate “a time for prayer in a new nation.”

The National Day of Prayer Task Force was created by the National Prayer Committee and is a non-governmental, privately-funded organization which helps coordinate many local observances.

  • ACT II takes applications for drama camp

    Ada Community Theatre (ACT II) is now taking applications for its summer Youth Drama Camp. The production will be “Montgomery Mansion”, a comical musical written by Vickie Reifsnider, Darice Strickland and Rudy Lupinski.  The camp receives funding assistance from the Oklahoma Arts Council.
