MUSKOGEE — A Texas man pleaded guilty in federal court to stealing money from the Chickasaw Nation.
United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Oklahoma Sheldon J. Sperling said Joe Elmer Ramos, 37, Valley View, Texas, pleaded guilty to theft by officer or employee of gaming establishment on Indian lands.
“Charges arose from an investigation by the Chickasaw Nation Lighthorse Police and the Bureau of Indian Affairs,” Sperling said. “Ramos was indicted in June 2010.”
Sperling alleged that from on or about Oct. 17, 2006, and continuing until on or about Nov. 13, 2006, Ramos, a Black Jack dealer for the Chickasaw Nation Winstar World Casino, stole approximately $47,000.
“The investigation revealed that the defendant was ‘palming’ chips during most of his shifts,” Sperling said.
Magistrate Judge Steven P. Shreder accepted Ramos’ guilty plea and ordered the completion of a presentence report. Sentencing will be scheduled following its completion.
“(Ramos) remains on bond pending sentencing,” Sperling said. “The statutory range of punishment is not more than 20 years imprisonment and/or up to $1 million in fines. A preliminary calculation of the sentencing guidelines, predicts a term of 8-14 months imprisonment.”
