Overmier to perform at First Friday

Ada — Flutist Juliana Overmier will perform a concert for Ada Arts and Heritage Center’s First Friday series noon Friday at the center, 14th and Rennie.

Accompanying at the piano will be Dr. Starla Hibler, professor of music at East Central University. They will perform works by Sadao Bekku, Salamon Jadassohn, Rhené-Baton and Giulio Briccialdi.

Lunch will be provided at noon, with the concert to follow. There is no charge but donations will be accepted. Call 580-332-7302 for details.      

Overmier has taught flute at ECU and directed the ECU Flute Ensemble since 2004.

She made recent news as a prize winner in the 2009 Chicago Flute Club’s Solo Artist Competition, and as a winner in the 2009 National Flute Association’s Convention Performers Competition in New York.

An active performer and competitor, she also has won first prize in the James Pappoutsakis Memorial Flute Competition in Boston, the Concours Artistique Lucien Wurmser in Paris, and in 2007, the Byron Hester Solo Flute Competition in Houston.

After earning a bachelor’s degree at DePauw University in Indiana, Overmier moved to Boston to study privately, then traveled to Nice, France, where she earned a diploma at the Nice Conservatory’s summer program. She moved to Paris to study at the Conservatory of Bourg-la-Reine/Sceaux, from which she received a gold medal, the highest diploma awarded.





In 1996 she earned a master’s degree in flute performance from the University of Southern California, where she also won the Annual Concerto Competition.  While living in Los Angeles, she performed on several film soundtracks, including “As Good As It Gets” and “Halloween H20.”

Overmier is a member of the Tulsa Opera Orchestra and also performs with the Tulsa Symphony. She was principal flutist for the Light Opera of Oklahoma Orchestra in Tulsa for the 2001 and 2002 seasons. She has performed with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, the former Tulsa Philharmonic, the Tulsa Oratorio Chorus and the Tulsa Ballet orchestra.

In addition to teaching at ECU, her freelance playing and large private teaching studio, Overmier is a member of the Cimarron Wind Quintet and the board of directors of the Oklahoma Flute Society and is a frequent clinician and adjudicator for musical organizations statewide.

Dr. Starla Hibler has taught at ECU since 1991. She holds doctoral and master’s degrees in piano performance from the University of North Texas and a bachelor of music degree in piano performance from Illinois Wesleyan University. She also has studied at the Vienna Conservatory in Austria.

Hibler is active nationally as a soloist, accompanist and chamber music performer.  As an active member of Oklahoma Music Teachers Association, College Music Society and Oklahoma Federation of Music Clubs, she serves regularly as a clinician and adjudicator.

She was awarded the 2009 Teacher of the Year Award by the Oklahoma Federation of Music Clubs. In 2001 she was honored as the “Outstanding Adan in the Arts” by the Ada Arts Council. During the summers of 2005 to 2008, she served on the piano faculty of Inspiration Point Fine Arts Colony’s Piano and String Camp in Eureka Springs, Ark., and became the Artist in Residence there in 2009.  She also is organist/choirmaster for St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Ada.
