Landlords to disclose properties used as meth labs

Ada —

A bill that would require landlords to disclose whether or not a residence was previously used to manufacture methamphetamines to potential tenants will take effect starting Nov. 1.

“If a landlord has to disclose it, at least that’s a step forward in the process toward getting them to clean it up,” State Representative Seneca Scott, author of the bill, said.

Local landlords willing to comment said they were in support of the law.

Cynthia Hagar, property manager at Linden Apartments, said she would have no problem disclosing meth manufacture in a residence she was renting.

“I’ve never run into that situation,” she said.

Kami Shurtleff, Meadow View Apartments property manager, said she is in full support of the law.

“I think it’s great,” Shurtleff said.  “I do not tolerate meth at all.  It’s a danger to kids and the entire complex.”

Carrie Giles, property manager of Tanglewood Terrace apartments, said she thinks it’s a good law.

“I live here and I know my residents.  They’re good people,” she said.  “I think (the law) is good because then tenants know what kind of place they’re getting into.”

The statute says landlords do not have to disclose the manufacture of methamphetamines in the residence if the level of contamination has been assessed and it “does not exceed one-tenth of one microgram per one hundred square centimeters of surface materials within the dwelling unit or pertinent part of the premises.”
