Valley View Regional Hospital’s emergency department has expanded its services in hiring four nurses trained to work with sexual assault victims.
Four Valley View nurses have earned certifications as sexual assault nurse examiners (SANE), one of whom specializes in pediatrics, according to Barbara Miller, marketing and public information officer.
Miller said there had not been an increase in such cases but officials there recognized the need to increase staff expertise to serve the community.
A SANE is a registered nurse who has received specialized education and fulfilled clinical requirements to perform forensic examinations for patients who report sexual assault. SANE nurses provide comprehensive care and have the expertise to offer effective courtroom testimony.
