Music festival winners to perform

Ada — Winners of the District VI Oklahoma Federation of Music Clubs Junior Festival will perform and compete statewide on Saturday, April 28th at Southern Nazarene University, Cantrell Hall at 9 a.m. in Bethany.

The winners competed in Ada on the East Central University campus Saturday, March 31.

Winner of the Pre-Primary Division was Charlie Rogers (student of Eva Strickland Phipps).  First alternate was Claire Tuley (student of Eva Strickland Phipps) and second alternate was Mykl Groetzinger (student of Bonita Blackburn).

Winner in the Lower-Primary Division was Michelle Marin (student of Bonita Blackburn).  First alternate was Brandon Thompson (student of Jessica Huddleston) and the second alternate was Adelina Solorzano (student of Carrie Draper).

Winner in the Upper-Primary Piano  Division was pianist Janelly Solorzano (student of Carrie Draper).  First alternate was Ethan Edwards (student of W.T. Skye Garcia), and second alternate was Cadey Netherton (student of Bonita Blackburn). Brennan Golden (student of Bonita Blackburn)  and Presley Nichols (student of Lynda Williams) won the Elementary Piano Solo Division.  First alternate was Micah Wakefield (student of Rebecca Clary). Second alternate was Calli Vandegriff (student of Bonita Blackburn).

In the Medium - Moderately Difficult III piano solo division the winner was Jordan Carter (student of Starla Hibler).  First alternate was Peter Biles (student of Starla Hibler) and second alternate was Mary Dixon (student of Janet Kirby).

In the Piano Duo category, Cayden Howard and Daniel McClain (students of W.T. Skye Garcia) were winners.  Ashlyn Angel and Zachary Garcia (students of W.T. Skye Garcia) were piano solo winners in the Very Difficult I - Very Difficult II categories. First alternate was Jack Malm and second alternate was Cayden Howard.

Jack Malm (student of W.T. Skye Garcia) won the Senior Class Piano Concerto category. Zachary Garcia was first alternate.

In the Vocal Solo category,  Alexis Farmer (student of Eva Strickland Phipps) won musical theater, Elementary Vocal Solo division.

Brenna Hefley (student of Eva Strickland Phipps) won the Senior Class event in the Vocal Solo Musical Theater division.

Macy Cothran (student of Susanne McDaniel) won the Junior Class category of the Vocal Solo Art Song division.  

Students receiving a Superior rating in piano solo at District VI Festival on March 31 were  Ashlyn Angel, Peter Biles, Leah Blackburn, Andrea Burnsworth,  Camden Burnsworth, Jordan Carter,  Gillian Cloar, Savannah Cloar,  Dylan Cunningham, Weston Cunningham, Carson Dean, Mary Dixon, Jason Draper, Ethan Edwards, Nixie Eppler, Gavin Fields, Zachary Garcia, Brennan Golden ,Tanner Goza, Mykl Groetzinger, Cait Gurley, Kellianne Hansen, Brad Hetherington, Cayden Howard,  Destiny James, Lauren Jolly, Wesley Kite, Jack Malm, Isaac Mapes, Memo Marin, Michelle Marin, Rodrigo Marin, Matthew McAngus,  Daniel McClain, Thaddaeus McClain, MacKenzie McCurtain, Cadey Netherton,  Carley Netherton, Presley Nichols, Courtney Phillips, Grace Pottebaum, Charlie Rogers, Kaylyn Rowsey, Adelina Solorzano, Janelly Solorzano, Mikayla Sparks,  Grace Spradlin,  Brandon Thompson, Alyssa Trett, Claire Tuley, Calli Vandegriff,  Noelle Vargas,  Mason Velarde, Micah Wakefield,  Timothy Wakefield, Daniel Wellington, Kalynn Williams, Raelyn Williamson,  and Christian Wright..

Receiving a Superior in the Piano Duo division were Cayden Howard and Daniel McClain.

Receiving a Superior rating in the Piano Concerto division were Ashlyn Angel, Zachary Garcia and Jack Malm.

Vocal soloists receiving superior ratings were Macy Cothran, Alizah Farmer, Aliyah Farmer, Alexis Farmer, Lanie Hand, Brenna Hefley, Courtney Philips, Saxon Rowland, Rylie Truver, Riley Webber, Kelcie Williams, and Paige Williams.

Lakshana Ramakrishnan received a superior rating in the Violin Solo division.

Teachers of the above students are Bonita Blackburn (Ada), Rebecca Clary (Tishomingo), W.T. Skye Garcia (Ada), Starla Hibler (Ada), Carrie Draper (Ada), Jessica Huddleston (Ada), Janet Kirby (Sulphur),  Norma Millsap (Ada)  Eva Strickland Phipps (Davis), Rudy Lupinski (Ada), Ashlyn Angel (Ada), Lynda Williams (Davis), Susann McDaniel (Tishomingo), Holly Vallandingham (Ada), and Susanne Woolley (Ada).

Judges for the March 31 District VI Oklahoma Federation of Music Clubs Junior Festival were Dr. Kelley Alig, (East Central University), Mr. Lewis Everett (Ada), Mrs. Ada Sewell (Norman),  Ms. Rachel Schmoyer (Oklahoma Baptist University),  and Dr. Mary Ann Craige (Southeastern Oklahoma State University).

  • Boat Full Wintersmith Lake hosts Chickasaw boaters

    A dragon boat, kayaks and canoes gracefully slid atop Wintersmith Lake in Ada during a special program hosted by the Chickasaw Nation Riversport Youth Canoe/Kayak League. This marked the first time in approximately 20 years such an event was conducted on the local lake.

  • ACT II takes applications for drama camp

    Ada Community Theatre (ACT II) is now taking applications for its summer Youth Drama Camp. The production will be “Montgomery Mansion”, a comical musical written by Vickie Reifsnider, Darice Strickland and Rudy Lupinski.  The camp receives funding assistance from the Oklahoma Arts Council.
