Ada —
Central Oklahoma Dance Center hosted an in-house convention this past week in Ada. It was the first time the center has hosted such an event.
Students from other studios outside Ada were invited to attend the convention with local students.
Three guest choreographers, Alicia Clifton, Barry Youngblood and Mario Matthews, held classes during the three-day event.
Clifton began dancing at the age of 3 and by 5 was dancing competitively. A national and international dance award winner, she is a two-time Silver Medalist and a Gold Medalist for USA at the World Dance Championships conducted in Riesa, Germany and Orlando, Fla. She was the first American Dance Idol and holds two dance-related Guinness World Records. Clifton was crowned Miss Oklahoma's Outstanding Teen in 2008 and Miss Oklahoma in 2012.
Youngblood has choreographed industrials for NIKE and REEBOK. His television credits include MTV Awards, VH1 Awards, Miss America Pageant, The Today Show, Regis and Kelly, The Young and the Restless and J.Lo NBC special. He has also performed for the Queen of England and with Kid Rock, Ja Rule and J.Lo. He was also the choreographer for the USA Dance Team World.
Matthews is a graduate of Oklahoma City University and is currently starring in Mamma Mia on Broadway in New York. His favorite credits include the international tour of Fame: The Musical (understudy Nick and Joe,) the National Tour of Seussical: The Musical (Horton), Radio City Christmas Spectacular, Ritchie Valens in Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story, Lun Tha in The King and I, All My Children, Ugly Betty and Across The Universe directed by Julie Taymor. Matthews is a Broadway Connection Master Teacher and member of Actor's Equity.
Local instructors for the convention included Taylor Treat Burget, Kaile Radford and Central Oklahoma Dance Center owner Cara Crawford.
