Candlelight vigil to focus on ending domestic abuse

Ada —

Forty-nine percent of Oklahoma women and 40 percent of men have experienced domestic violence, according to the 2010 National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey.

The Pontotoc County District Attorney’s Office will shine a spotlight on domestic violence next month, when it will team up with local social service agencies for a candlelight vigil. The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 11 on the plaza between the Pontotoc County Courthouse and the district attorney’s office.

Organizers want people to realize that domestic violence is a serious problem, but help is available, said Angela Bertis, shelter manager for the Family Crisis Center.
