Trump’s arrogance is staggering

Ada — To call Donald Trump an egotist would be redundant. His latest declaration that if “the wrong candidate is nominated to run” for president, he will jump in the race himself is breathtaking in its arrogance.

When Trump looks in the mirror he sees America’s potential savior smiling back at him. This isn’t so unusual in and of itself. Any potential candidate for that office has to have a king-sized ego to think himself (or herself) big enough to do the biggest job on earth.

What’s unusual about Trump is his sense of self-esteem is so colossal that his is a candidacy of condescension. It’s a bit like LeBron James offering to play on a grade school basketball team to assure it wins the championship game, that is, if in his estimation the team’s fifth player is not strong enough to assure a win.

 To add insult to injury, Trump’s assessment of some current contenders is they are, in his words, “joke candidates.”

 The irony — that he is the real joke — is something about which Trump is blissfully unaware. If he follows through on his threat he may become a joke with a very bad punch line indeed.

 Trump claims to be all about defeating Barack Obama, but the teensiest bit of recent history shows what a dangerous game third party candidates play. One with enough money to get his message out will likely take the guesswork out of whether or not Mr. Obama secures a second four-year term in the White House. It could be virtually guaranteed.

 Ralph Nader was the Green Party candidate in 2000 and as such, siphoned votes from Al Gore to George Bush’s Jr.’s benefit. The effect of Ross Perot’s 1992 entry into the presidential race is less certain because it took votes from both George Bush Sr. and Bill Clinton. Still, Perot’s candidacy only muddied the picture.

 A Trump candidacy would almost certainly take much needed votes from the Republican nominee no matter who it turns out to be. If Trump’s really interested in doing anything other than stroking his own ego, he would do well to stop blustering about running as a third party candidate.
