Weatherford —
East Central University struggled to find a shooting touch as Southwestern Oklahoma State notched a 73-50 Great American Conference men’s basketball win over the visiting Tigers.
ECU, which dropped to 3-14 on the season and 0-7 in the GAC, managed just 12 field goals the entire night as it shot just 34.3 percent from the field, including only 2-of-13 (15.4 percent) from 3-point territory. The Tigers also struggled from the free-throw line, connecting on only 24-of-39 attempts (61.5 percent).
Meanwhile, the Bulldogs shot at a 45.8 percent pace for the game, including 50 percent in the second half. SWOSU also knocked down 9-of-21 three-point tries (42.9 percent) and 20-26 free shots (76.9 percent).
Filip Toric led the Bulldogs with a game-leading 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting, including a pair of 3-pointers, to go with 4-of-4 free throws.
Marin Zelalija contributed 11 points for SWOSU while Dominick Cormelius and Thomas Davis contributed 10 apiece.
Senior guard Caprest Rhone topped the Tigers with 12 points, Dylan Lemley added 11 off the bench and Randolph Howell tacked on 10, all in the first half.
Lemley also pulled down six rebounds to lead ECU in that category and Bobby McAdoo grabbed five to go with his seven points.
The Tigers owned a 33-27 advantage on the boards, but committed seven more turnovers than the hosts, 17-10.
ECU got off to a sluggish start and tried to play catch-up the entire night as the Bulldogs jumped out to a 10-0 lead before two Nick Young free shots finally got the Tigers on the board.
Trailing 36-20, ECU responded with an 7-0 run in the final 1:32 to cut the halftime deficit to 36-27. A Howell jumper off a Rhone assist, two Rhone free shots and a Rhone 3-pointer at the buzzer sliced the SWOSU lead to nine points at the break.
But the Bulldogs responded with an 8-0 run to start the second half and take control.
The Tigers close out the first half of the GAC race on Saturday with a visit to Southeastern Oklahoma State for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff in Durant.
