Junior guard Kodi Morrison tossed in a career-best 20 points while teammate Ashley Robison registered a double-double as East Central University knocked off Southwestern Christian 82-58 Tuesday night in women’s basketball action on Wayne Cobb Court inside the Kerr Activities Center.
Morrison knocked down 9-of-14 shots from the floor, including one 3-pointer, and finished with four rebounds, four assists and two steals with no turnovers in 28 minutes of play for the Lady Tigers, who improved to 2-8 on the season in their final non-conference game.
Meanwhile, the sophomore forward Robison fueled ECU’s rebounding success on the night as she snatched 10 to go with her 10 points. The Lady Tigers owned a commanding 57-40 advantage on the boards as Robison had half of those on the offensive end.
ECU finished 22 total offensive boards as junior post Lindsay McCown, despite sub-par shooting, did finish with eight rebounds to go with her 13 points.
All but one Lady Tiger player got into the scoring column as ECU avenged an earlier season loss to the Lady Eagles in Bethany.
Junior guard Jourdan Clark supplied eight points to go with three boards, two assists and two steals while the freshmen tandem of Taylor Fischer and Erin Walling tacked on seven points apiece.
Fischer was 3-of-5 from the floor, including one 3-pointer, to go with four rebounds, a pair of assists and one steal. Walling was 3-of-7 from the field, including one trey, to go with four rebounds.
Fanta Toure also enjoyed a big night in the rebounding department for the Lady Tigers with seven to go with her four points.
ECU, which shot 42.6 percent for the game, led from start to finish and had a 39-23 halftime lead only to see the scrappy Lady Eagles (4-11) cut the deficit to 60-55 with 8:35 remaining.
SCU was within 64-58 with just over seven minutes to go before Walling knocked down a 3-point jumper off a Fischer assist with 6:51 left, which jump-started an 18-0 run by the Lady Tigers down the stretch as the visitors went scoreless the rest of the way.
That massive run by ECU was helped along by the defensive presence of Morrison, whose back-to-back steals inflated the cushion to 74-58 with 5:02 remaining. Her first steal resulted in a Walling jumper and Morrison executed a layup off her own steal in transition to put the game away.
The Lady Tigers finished with nine steals on the night and showed poise on the offensive end by committing a season-low 11 turnovers and compiling 21 assists.
Allie McIntosh was the only Lady Eagle in double figures with 10, including a pair of converted 3-point jumpers. Kelsey Dawkins followed with nine points, including one trey. Natasha Flynn grabbed a team-high seven rebounds in a losing cause.
ECU opens Great American Conference play tonight at Ouachita Baptist at 5:30 p.m. in Arkadelphia, Ark. The Lady Tigers will stay in Arkadelphia and battle host Henderson State on Saturday at 2 p.m.
The East Central men also open Great American Conference play tonight at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Ark., at 7:30 p.m.
The Tigers then play in Arkadelphia again on Saturday against Henderson State at 4 p.m.
